• The film was first built as a PG-13 send-up of the cartoon in the vein of The Brady Bunch Movie, with Shaggy written as a stoner and a string of marijuana jokes.
• Sarah Michelle Gellar said a kiss between her Daphne and Linda Cardellini's Velma was cut: in the soul-swapping scene the two could not get their souls back into the right bodies, and kissing was how they fixed it.
• On the film's fifteenth anniversary in 2017, screenwriter James Gunn revealed that an R-rated cut existed and that CGI had been used to reduce the cleavage of the female cast.

  Much of the film was shot with a nameless monster as the villain, and a second ending was filmed with Old Man Smithers unmasked, before the team settled on Scrappy-Doo, a character screenwriter James Gunn disliked.
• Jim Carrey was once attached to play Shaggy and Mike Myers wanted the part as well, with Lochlyn Munro auditioning, before it went to Matthew Lillard, who said that if he ever had to watch another episode of Scooby-Doo it would be too soon.
• Playing Shaggy here led to a career: from 2010 Matthew Lillard became the voice of the character across Scooby-Doo media at the request of original voice actor Casey Kasem, who had stepped down for health reasons.
• Scooby's voice changed hands twice: Hadley Kay was chosen by William Hanna and then fired, Scott Innes was lined up and replaced, and the part went to Neil Fanning, who was performing in the Police Academy Stunt Show at Warner Bros. Movie World.
• Jim Henson's Creature Shop built a life-sized Scooby puppet for the film, and it was scrapped in favour of creating the dog entirely in computer animation.
