Plot summary
A young woman named Rosie Jones boards a train with a large trunk that begins to leak blood. Questioned by the police, she explains without distress that the dead are her husband and the woman he was seeing; convicted of manslaughter and judged to have diminished responsibility, she is sent to a unit for the criminally insane. Forty-three years later, the Reverend Walter Goodfellow, vicar of Little Wallop, spends his time composing a sermon for a Church of England convention. He does not notice that his wife Gloria has taken up with Lance, her golf instructor, that his daughter Holly keeps changing boyfriends, or that his son Petey is bullied at school. A new housekeeper, Grace Hawkins, arrives and learns of the household's troubles.
