Plot summary
Johnny English is a clerk at MI7 who dreams of becoming the agency's top agent. When Agent One is killed, and then the rest of MI7's agents die at his funeral, English is the only one left who can finish Agent One's assignment. That assignment involves the Crown Jewels, which Pascal Sauvage, a French prison magnate, has arranged to put on display. At the unveiling at the Tower of London, English meets Lorna Campbell, a woman whose background he cannot place. During a blackout the jewels are stolen, and English accidentally knocks the security chief unconscious. He fights an assailant who is not there, then gives Pegasus, the head of MI7, a description of a suspect he never saw. With his assistant Bough, English traces a tunnel beneath the display case.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Johnny English (2003)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Johnny English is based on Richard Latham, a character Rowan Atkinson played in a series of British television adverts for Barclaycard; the sidekick Bough was kept from those adverts, where Henry Naylor played the part, and gags were reused, including English shooting Pegasus's secretary with a tranquilliser ballpoint pen.
- The exterior of Sauvage's French château is not in France at all: it is the castle atop St Michael's Mount in Cornwall.
- Some scenes were filmed at Canary Wharf in London, where the film duplicates the single real tower into two identical ones on the real site, standing in for the fictional London Hospital and for Sauvage's headquarters at 1 Canada Square.
- For the film's main theme, Shearmur incorporated the six-note jingle that Howard Goodall had composed for the Barclaycard advertisements that spawned the film.
