Plot summary
In the early 1880s, cowboys in the pay of Abe McQuown terrorize the small Utah mining town of Warlock, murdering without cause and chasing off any deputy who resists. The Citizens' Committee hires renowned gunfighter Clay Blaisedell as town marshal, even though Warlock is not incorporated and cannot legally appoint one; Judge Holloway and others have misgivings. Blaisedell brings his clubfooted friend Tom Morgan, an expert gunman, to run the saloon. Their first brush with McQuown's men ends without violence; the cowboys are cowed, and Johnny Gannon, one of their number, remains behind because he can no longer stomach the killing.
