Tom Drake
Biography
Tom Drake was an American actor, born in Brooklyn, New York. He began on Broadway as Alfred Alderdice in Run Sheep Run and Clean Beds, then got his break starring in the 1942 Broadway hit Janie, which led to a contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. At MGM he was Judy Garland's leading man in Meet Me in St. Louis (1944), played the boy next door John Truitt, and was promoted to leading roles with This Man's Navy (1945) opposite Wallace Beery. He starred in the hit The Green Years and the big hit Courage of Lassie (1946), and portrayed composer Richard Rodgers in Words and Music (1948). Later films included Scene of the Crime (1949), The Great Rupert (1950), Raintree County (1957), Warlock (1959) as a gang leader, and The Singing Nun (1966). He also appeared frequently on television, with his last acting credit in 1975.
