John Marley

Biography

John Marley was an American actor and theater director whose career spanned more than 45 years. Born in Harlem, New York City, he left City College of New York to act, and during World War II he was in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. He appeared in nearly 250 films and television series. Faces (1968), directed by John Cassavetes, earned him the Venice festival's Volpi Cup for Best Actor. His part in Love Story (1970) brought Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations. He played the film mogul Jack Woltz in The Godfather (1972). Other films included The Car (1977) and Hooper (1978). On television he was seen in Perry Mason, The Twilight Zone, Gunsmoke, and The Incredible Hulk. His Broadway credits included The Investigation (1966), and he directed Little Theater productions in a number of cities.

Behind the award
For his work in John Cassavetes' Faces (1968), Marley received the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the 29th Venice International Film Festival. His part in Love Story (1970) brought him Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations.
