Plot summary
In 1946 Alfred Eaton leaves the navy and returns to Philadelphia. His mother, Martha, drinks heavily after years of neglect from her husband Samuel, who runs an iron and steel company. Samuel keeps his distance from the family, resentful since his firstborn son died thirteen years before. Alfred refuses the family business and goes into partnership with his closest friend, Lex Porter. At a party hosted by Lex's wealthy uncle, Alfred meets Mary St. John, who gives up Dr. Jim Roper, to whom she was secretly engaged. When Samuel falls ill, Alfred again turns away from the company and starts an aviation firm with Lex.
