Plot summary
On a cruise, Doc Ryan falls overboard, and the rope of the lifebuoy Larry Wilson throws him tangles around Larry's ankle, pulling him into the sea. An oar strikes his head. Larry comes to in his cabin remembering that he is George Carey, a con man whose last memory is a fight in 1931, and that nine years have passed. Doc, a fellow grifter, learns of $147,000 in Larry's accounts, and the two plan to go to Habersville, Pennsylvania, to collect it. Kay, Larry's wife, meets the ship in New York and announces she intends to divorce him. At the bank, one account is overdrawn by a land purchase and the other two are controlled by the Community Chest and the Anti-Vice League. George and Doc plan to plant oil on the land and sell it to investors.

- Lux Radio Theatre adapted the film twice: in 1941 with Myrna Loy and Cary Grant, and in 1948 with William Powell and Ann Sothern. Loy was supposed to reprise her film role in the 1948 version but dropped out to do retakes on another film.
