Gage Clarke

Biography

Gage Clarke was an American character actor whose career moved from Broadway to television and film. Born in Vassar, Michigan, in 1900, he spent the first half of his career mainly in New York theater, appearing in Broadway productions such as A Ledge, The Inside Story, and Jezebel, and earning favorable notices for his central role in the 1937 play Many Mansions. After returning to the stage in The Happy Time, which Variety praised, he shifted increasingly to television from 1949 onward. His roles included Mr. Bascomb on Mister Peepers, Foursquare Farley on Maverick, and recurring parts as Mr. Dobie and Mr. Botkin on Gunsmoke. In film, he specialized in character parts, playing the villain in Nightmare and Reginald Tasker in The Bad Seed, both released in 1956. He died in 1964.
