Plot summary
A military team is finishing work on the Thunderer, a rocket intended to put an atomic device into a permanent orbit around Earth, and the personnel live in a seaside trailer park. Seven children there become friends. On the beach they watch a beam of light come down and a small glowing object drift to the rocks. Bud Brewster begins hearing a voice that no one else can. That evening, after a community cookout, the children return to the beach and find a small alien resting there. It assigns them a secret mission by telepathy, with Bud as their leader. Bud and his brother Ken tell their parents, and their father Dave becomes angry and believes the boys are lying about staying out late. When he grabs Bud, his own arm is paralyzed.

- When the original leading lady dropped out at the last minute, producer William Alland called Orson Welles, for whom he had acted in Citizen Kane, asking for a replacement; Welles named Peggy Webber, who had worked with him on radio and in his 1948 Macbeth.
- The alien brain was created by special-effects artist Ivyl Burks, who used $3,300 worth of neon lights to give it its glowing effect.
- The film was featured on Mystery Science Theater 3000 in 1998, and that episode is one of only 11 episodes of the show never given a commercial release because of copyright issues.
