Biography

Kim Novak is an American actress who retired from film work. Born in Chicago, she signed with Columbia Pictures in 1954, and she soon became a major box office attraction through The Man with the Golden Arm (1955), Picnic (1955), and Pal Joey (1957). She won a Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer for Picnic. Her role in Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo (1958) brought her prominence, and the film was later voted best film of all time in a 2012 Sight & Sound critics' poll. Other notable credits include Bell, Book and Candle (1958), Kiss Me, Stupid (1964), and Strangers When We Meet (1960). By 1965 she mostly withdrew from acting and appeared sporadically, later working on The Mirror Crack'd (1980) and Falcon Crest from 1986 to 1987. After Liebestraum (1991), she retired. Her honors include a Golden Lion for lifetime achievement, two Golden Globes, an Honorary Golden Bear, and a Hollywood Walk of Fame star.

First role
Novak's first part for Columbia came in the film noir Pushover, made in 1954, and she was billed third, after Fred MacMurray and Philip Carey.
Behind the award
Novak won a Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer for Picnic, and the director had her wear a red wig because he thought it suited the character.
Getting ready for a role
Before filming started, Novak told the director she thought the gray suit and black shoes she was to wear were too heavy and stiff for her character. He insisted she wear them, and she learned to make it work, seeing the outfit as a symbol of her character.
