First role
Adams got his first film part in 1951, playing an uncredited Western Union delivery boy with one line in George Seaton's Somebody Loves Me. That part let him join the Screen Actors Guild.
Big break
While in his Coast Guard uniform, Adams impressed director John Ford with a brash audition featuring impressions of James Cagney and other celebrities after his ship reached Long Beach Harbor in June 1954. He then used his leave to play Seaman Reber in the 1955 movie Mister Roberts.
Own stunts
Adams performed his own fight scenes in Kenpo, a style he had been learning in the States under senior grand master Ed Parker.
Beyond film
For The Rebel, Adams hoped Presley would perform the theme song, though the producer preferred Johnny Cash. Adams cut "Tired and Lonely Rebel" in 1960.
