Philip Carey

Biography

Philip Carey was an American actor whose career moved from 1950s film roles to a long run in daytime television. Born in Hackensack, New Jersey, and raised in Rosedale, Queens, and Malverne, New York, he studied drama at the University of Miami. After serving in the Marine Corps in World War II and Korea, he began acting in 1950, earning an early role as Lt. (jg) Bob Perry in Operation Pacific (1951). He appeared in 1950s features such as Calamity Jane (1953), Pushover (1954), and Mister Roberts (1955). On television he starred in NBC's Tales of the 77th Bengal Lancers and played Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe in a short-lived ABC series from 1959 to 1960. In 1980 he joined the soap opera One Life to Live, originating Asa Buchanan, a ruthless business tycoon, and played that role for nearly three decades, including guest appearances on All My Children in 2003 and 2004. He died in 2009.
