Plot summary
The Union army in the Civil War needs horses, and raiders in Colorado keep taking the herds its troops are driving, warned in advance of where each shipment will go. Major Lex Kearney is charged with cowardice after his own herd is lost, and the army expels him and marks him in disgrace. He is given a secret assignment as a counterintelligence agent: to join the men conducting the raids, win their confidence, and learn who has been passing them the army's information.
