Plot summary
Bill Clark was 13 when he was sent to prison for killing his abusive father, and he leaves it 18 years later, a grown man who has never drunk alcohol or known a woman. In his hometown of Norton City he finds no place for himself, so he goes to New York City. A reporter, Dan Monroe, draws him out for a story about the released boy killer, and Bill turns wary of strangers. He is drawn to Cathy "Cay" Higgins, a taxi dancer who first refuses him, then accepts a watch and shows him the city. At her apartment, George Conover, her estranged boyfriend, orders Bill out and pulls a gun.
