Plot summary
Harry Wheeler shoots a bank guard dead during a robbery and gets away with $250,000. Lieutenant Carl Eckstrom wants Wheeler taken alive so he can be questioned, so officers watch the apartment of Wheeler's girlfriend, Lona McLane, from a flat across the street. Paul Sheridan, Rick McAllister and Paddy Dolan take the shifts, and McAllister watches Lona's neighbor, Ann Stewart, as closely as he watches Lona. Paddy, near retirement and with a drinking problem, would lose his pension after one more reprimand, and Eckstrom asks Sheridan to take care of him. Sheridan, working undercover, met Lona when her car would not start, and the two have spent several days together. She asks him to kill Wheeler and take the money so they can leave together, and he refuses at first.

- Producer Jules Schermer borrowed heavily from his own 1947 film Framed, with Glenn Ford and Janis Carter, reusing its ending and even its dialogue for Pushover; when writer Roy Huggins saw a rough cut, he said Schermer had ruined his picture.
- Producer Jules Schermer said Kim Novak photographed sensationally but could not show any emotion, so the production kept her dialogue to a minimum, reasoning that when you cannot act, you react.
