Plot summary
Linda Atlas, a freelance stenographer, is at Canfield's house when three young men, Joey, Gil and Jess, arrive. The robbery they came to commit leaves Canfield dead, and they keep Linda there, arguing about what to do with the only witness they believe exists. She tells them she has a son somewhere and that she does not know where he went. Petey, who saw his mother terrorized, wanders away; truck drivers find him and bring him to police headquarters, where officers know him as the son of detective Tony Atlas. The boy is too shocked to recognize his father or explain anything. Canfield's niece arrives with her husband, since he missed his regular dinner appointment with them; seeing Linda's car outside, the pair take it that he is entertaining a woman and drive off.
