Plot summary
Carol Wetherly lives in the California town of Hamlin with her children Brad, Mary Liz and Scottie. Her husband Tom works in San Francisco. One afternoon a television program is interrupted by a report of nuclear explosions, the broadcast goes dead, and a flash of light crosses the sky. The family drops to the floor as sirens sound. Neighbors gather at the house of Henry Abhart, who runs a ham radio and can still reach rural areas but no cities. At the gas station, Mike sells gasoline only to his regular customers, and the doctor says he has no way to measure how much radiation people have taken in. Carol leaves a note for Tom and gives shelter to Larry, a neighborhood boy whose parents cannot be found.
