Plot summary
A year after the ambush that killed his wife, Buford Pusser still breaks down at her grave, telling her he regrets ignoring her wish that he not become sheriff. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation tells him there is no case against John Witter, and attorney Lloyd Tatum urges patience. In New York, Witter promises his boss he will settle with Buford, and his boss forces him to cede a quarter of his territory. On a stakeout with Deputy Grady Coker, Buford sees O.Q. Teal beat his son Robby and beats O.Q. the same way, then takes the boy to an orphanage. Luan Paxton, who once helped him against the state line gang, meets him at her hotel and says she now works in real estate. Carl tells his son the office has run up too many expenses.
