Plot summary
When Janet Hallson quits the Broadway revue in rehearsals, producer Felix Jordan plans to cancel it. Ted Sturgis argues for an open casting call, and the newspapers bring crowds of hopefuls. The field narrows to three. Composer Leo Belney backs the ballerina Joanna Moss. Bob Dowdy, the revue's gofer, is enchanted by the novice tapper Suzy Doolittle. Felix then persuades Madelyn Corlane, Ted's former dance partner, to come out of retirement and try out, which unsettles Ted. Each of the three has a champion whose interest is professional and personal. Joanna's husband has been offered a university post, and Suzy's mother tells her to spend the evening rehearsing.
