Kate Barker, called Ma, brings up her four sons as thieves, starting with the collection plate at church. Her husband George tries to talk her out of using the boys for crime and gets nowhere; she scorns weakness. When Herman, the sensitive one, is arrested after a fun fair robbery she forced on him, George leaves, and the sheriff runs the family out of town. Years on, Ma plans jobs with her grown sons, and the underworld knows her for efficiency and ruthlessness.
