Biography

Born Betty Gleadle in Scunthorpe, Liz Smith was an English actress known for BBC sitcoms after a late start. She was nearly fifty when Mike Leigh cast her as the downtrodden mother in Bleak Moments (1972), leading to roles in I Didn't Know You Cared, 2point4 Children, The Vicar of Dibley, and The Royle Family. As Norma, known as Nana, in The Royle Family she earned a BAFTA nomination and a British Comedy Award in 2007, and she had earlier won a supporting actress BAFTA for A Private Function (1984), playing the mother of Maggie Smith's character. On film she was Grandma Georgina in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), voiced Mrs. Mulch in Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005), and had a small role in Keeping Mum (2005). She later appeared in Lark Rise to Candleford and was made an MBE in 2009.
