Plot summary
Ebenezer Scrooge is a moneylender in London. Seven years after the death of Jacob Marley, his business partner, Scrooge works at his counting house on Christmas Eve 1843. His clerk, Bob Cratchit, is the target of his cruelty. Scrooge refuses his nephew Fred's invitation to Christmas dinner, turns away two gentlemen collecting charitable donations, and frightens a carol singer with a ruler. He gives Cratchit the day off but orders him to come in early the next morning. At home, Scrooge is visited by Marley's tortured ghost. Marley warns that Scrooge will have to repay the suffering he causes others, even in death, and says three spirits will visit him over three nights.
