Graham Crowden
Biography
Graham Crowden was a Scottish actor who worked across stage, television and film, frequently cast as eccentric doctors, teachers and scientists. Born in Edinburgh in 1922, he started out in regional repertory theater and made his West End debut in 1956 in Major Barbara at the Old Vic, playing Charles Lomax. He appeared at the Royal Court Theatre in avant-garde productions and joined Laurence Olivier's National Theatre company in 1965; he also performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company. In film he was the history master in if.... (1968) and Doctor Millar in Lindsay Anderson's O Lucky Man! (1973) and Britannia Hospital (1982), and he played Doctor Smiles in The Final Programme (1973). On television he had a regular part in A Very Peculiar Practice and starred in the sitcom Waiting for God from 1990. He died in 2010.

A role that slipped away
In 1974, after Jon Pertwee left Doctor Who, Crowden was asked to play the Fourth Doctor but declined, telling producer Barry Letts he would not commit to the series for three years. Tom Baker got the part.
First role
Crowden began his professional career in regional repertory theater, then became a prominent stage actor in London. In 1956 he made his West End debut at the Old Vic, playing Charles Lomax in George Bernard Shaw's Major Barbara.
