Plot summary
Le Hollandais is a high-class restaurant in London run by the French chef Richard Boarst, and the gangster Albert Spica has taken it over. Spica arrives each night with his retinue of thugs; his coarse behavior offends the staff and drives off the paying diners, whose money he does not seem to miss. His elegant wife, Georgina, is forced to accompany him and is disgusted by him. She catches the eye of Michael, a bookshop owner who eats there every evening with a book for company. The restaurant staff help her, and she and Michael meet in secret under her husband's nose. Georgina has tried before to escape her marriage.

- Jean-Paul Gaultier designed the costumes so that they change color as characters move through the film: blue outside the restaurant, green in the kitchen, red in the dining room, white in the restrooms and orange/brown in the book depository.
- The MPAA gave Miramax a choice between an X rating and releasing the film unrated, and unrated was chosen because the X rating was more associated with pornography. Two VHS versions followed in the 1990s, including an R-rated cut running 95 minutes mainly for large video store chains.
