Plot summary
In 1928 David Ash teaches at the University of Camberley and works to expose fraudulent mediums, a career shaped by his twin sister Juliet's drowning when both were eleven; he blames himself, and after her death he and his mother settled in America. At a séance he unmasks the medium's tricks and her hidden helpers, then hears her call his name in a voice like Juliet's. Urgent letters from a Miss Webb, who says ghosts torment her, bring him to Sussex, where Christina Mariell collects him at the railway station. Miss Webb is the Mariells' Nanny Tess, and Christina and her brothers Robert and Simon asked her to write because they think her mind is failing. At Edbrook House David starts testing the rooms for paranormal activity, while Christina's attentions and Robert's objections unsettle his stay.
