Plot summary
George Saunders runs a roadside garage and cafe in the English countryside with his young wife Marilyn. George hires Tom Price, a drifter mechanic, who takes the room above the garage. George expects Marilyn to look pretty and do as he says, and when he leaves for London he refuses to take her. Marilyn turns to Tom, and the two begin an affair. George comes home early, finds them together, and attacks Marilyn. Tom pulls him off and punches him, and George strikes his head on a dresser and dies. A passing driver, Nicky Everton, stops for petrol and Marilyn sends him away. She and Tom move George's body to the foot of the stairs and claim he fell while drunk. Rosie, the maid, hears them discussing the plan, and the coroner's jury returns a verdict of accidental death.
