Plot summary
The eldest of a senator's daughters, April Delongpre comes home to Alabama for the summer before her semi-arranged marriage to Chad. When a carnival arrives, April and Chad take Samantha and Jody, her younger sisters, along to the fairgrounds, where April notices a rugged drifter named Perry Tyson. Perry gives back the wallet she left on one of the rides, and that night April comes again to the carnival to speak with him, refusing his advances. Days later, with Chad away on business and her parents and sisters also gone, Perry appears at her house and the two begin an affair. April visits her grandmother Belle Delongpre, and after April has left, Belle speaks with Sheriff Earl Hawkins about keeping watch on her.
