Plot summary
Russ Duritz is a successful image consultant in Los Angeles. He is days away from his fortieth birthday, his relationship with his father is strained, and he is cynical and alone. Coming home, he finds a toy plane left outside and a strange boy in the house, and chases him down the street. The boy shows up again at home, eating popcorn and watching cartoons, and gives his name as Rusty. Russ notices the resemblance, compares birthmarks and memories, and works out that Rusty is his own eight-year-old self. Rusty tells him he grows up to be a loser. He dreams of a dog called Chester and of flying planes, dreams Russ abandoned. Amy, Russ's assistant, mistakes them for father and son.

- Audrey Wells wrote the screenplay meaning to direct it herself with Jon Turteltaub producing, but Turteltaub fell in love with the story and decided to direct, wanting Bruce Willis for Russ because he is so likeable on screen when playing a jerk.
- The Kid was part of a three-picture deal that Willis cut with Disney to compensate the studio for the dissolution of 1997's Broadway Brawler.
- Disney's The Kid opened at number four at the North American box office with $12,687,726 in its opening weekend, behind The Patriot, The Perfect Storm and Scary Movie.
