Jeremy Irvine
Biography
Jeremy Irvine is an English actor born in Gamlingay. He began acting at 16 after a drama teacher inspired him, and he performed in productions at Bedford Modern School and with the National Youth Theatre before completing a foundation course at LAMDA. Steven Spielberg selected him from hundreds of actors to lead War Horse (2011), his film debut, in which he gained muscle and trained on horseback; the role brought nominations for the London Film Critics' Choice Award and the Empire Award. Irvine then played Pip in Great Expectations (2012) and the young Eric Lomax in The Railway Man (2013), losing weight and doing his own torture scenes. He starred in Now Is Good (2012), Fallen (2016), and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (2018) as the younger Sam Carmichael. On television he played John Randolph Bentley in Treadstone, and he appeared as James Sunderland in Return to Silent Hill (2026).

Early training
At Bedford Modern School, Irvine took on Romeo and other main parts in plays, having been drawn to acting at 16 by his drama teacher's encouragement, and he later spent a run with the National Youth Theatre.
Early training
Irvine finished a foundation course lasting one year at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. For two years he posted his CV through letterboxes seeking acting work, did web design and worked in his local supermarket, and nearly quit acting before his break in War Horse.
Big break
Steven Spielberg cast Irvine as Albert in War Horse after looking at hundreds of actors and newcomers, saying nobody else had the heart, spirit or communication skills that Irvine had.
First role
In his first scene of the Royal Shakespeare Company's 2010 production of Dunsinane, Irvine waved two branches, which his friends teased him about.
