Plot summary
Lucinda Luce Price is blamed for Trevor's death, which happens in a fire started by shadows she sees after kissing him. She is sent to Sword and Cross, an academy for troubled teens. There she meets Arriane Alter, who takes her under her wing, Penn Van Syckle-Lockwood, who becomes her friend, and Molly Zane. Cam Briel pursues her, while Daniel Grigori, a brooding student, attracts her even as he keeps his distance. Miss Sophia teaches religious studies at the school. While picking up trash during detention, a falling statue of an avenging angel nearly crushes her. Cam invites her to a party in the woods, where she feels drawn to him but also senses an unusual connection to Daniel. Molly harasses her there until Arriane intervenes, and Luce sees the shadows again.
