Plot summary
Every morning the same commuters travel by train from the village of Langton into London, and nobody says a word to anybody else. Adam and Emma are two of them, riding the same route day after day among familiar, silent faces. Then the train stops in the countryside, stranded, and the passengers are left sitting together in the carriage. Adam has been thinking about his life. He gets up and does what nobody on that train ever does: he talks to the strangers around him. He then suggests that they all mark the season with a party of their own, on board.
