Plot summary
With the London Blitz under way, schoolteacher Eve Parkins joins headmistress Jean Hogg in taking a group of children to Crythin Gifford, a village on the coast that stands all but empty. On the train Eve meets Harry Burnstow, an RAF pilot based at an airfield close by. A man named Jacob confronts Eve when she reaches the village. The children are housed at Eel Marsh House, a manor on an island in the marshes, and Edward, who has not spoken since the bombing, is bullied by two of the other children. In the cellar Eve hears a rocking chair and finds a message that scolds her for giving up her child, and she glimpses a woman dressed in black. Edward sees the same figure in the nursery, a rotting doll in his hands.
