Plot summary
Artist James Sunderland runs into Mary Crane as she prepares to leave Silent Hill, the town where she grew up. He makes her miss her bus, so she turns back, he offers her a ride, and the two become a couple and settle in Silent Hill. Years afterward James lives away from the town and drinks heavily, and a psychologist tries to help him. Then a letter from Mary reaches him, asking him to return to Silent Hill, and he leaves at once. He finds the streets in fog, the air full of falling ash, and almost nobody left after an illness killed many residents. A woman named Angela crosses his path, and a monstrous entity attacks him.

- Christophe Gans was set to direct Silent Hill: Revelation, but he refused once he realized the producers wanted to make it "a kind of Resident Evil". He said he wanted to stay true to his principles.
- According to director Christophe Gans, every monster in the film was played by a professional dancer in prosthetic makeup, even the ones meant to be computer-generated, because using on-set performers as reference simplified the visual effects work.
- Sony announced in November 2010 that M. J. Bassett would direct the next Silent Hill film from her own screenplay, but Roger Avary was sentenced to one year in jail for vehicular manslaughter, preventing his involvement.
- Creature designer Patrick Tatopoulos drew all his designs, including Red Pyramid, as pencil sketches instead of 3D models, and built the monster the Abstract Daddy "95% through practical effects" with an animatronic covered in stained linen sheets.
- Christophe Gans said he would have refused to make Return to Silent Hill without Akira Yamaoka, who scored the vast majority of the Silent Hill games and composed the film's music.
- In February 2025, Gans said he had "finished the film 10 days ago", and that it was supposed to be finished in April 2024 but "because of the executive producers, it dragged on" until that January.
