Plot summary
In a future society divided into Uppers and Lowers, Uma is an Upper who will not go along with the match her mother has arranged, and she loves Markus, a working-class man. She wakes on Paradise, an island school for daughters whose families have sent them away, with no memory of how she got there. Among the other students are Amarna, a pop star who clashed with the company that controls her records, Chloe, whose parents want her made thin and obedient, and Yu, a Lower sent by her aunt and uncle after she refused to take over the family business. The Duchess, who runs Paradise, presses Uma to marry up as her mother wishes. The makeup, hairdressing, manners sessions and therapy leave the students unchanged.
