Plot summary
Bella Brown, a young foundling with obsessive-compulsive disorder, spends her days at a public library and hopes to write and illustrate a children's book. Plants frighten her, and the garden of the basement flat she rents has gone untended. Her landlord gives her one month to improve it or lose the flat, and she meets Alfie Stevenson, the curmudgeonly widower next door, along with his cook Vernon. Vernon persuades Alfie to help her, and the older man, a horticulturalist, teaches her to work with the plants she fears. A romance begins with Billy Tranter, an inventor who comes to the library often and encourages her to start a new story.
