Plot summary

John Madec, a ruthless tycoon and trophy collector, drives his all-terrain vehicle into a small Mojave desert town and pays off the local sheriff to arrange a hunt for an endangered desert bighorn sheep. The sheriff asks Ben, a young but experienced tracker, to guide Madec an hour outside town into the canyon country of Shiprock. Ben's girlfriend Laina has left for Colorado on a college swimming scholarship. Ben asks to see the permit for the endangered sheep, and Madec offers him a wad of cash instead, which the stunned Ben accepts. On the hunt, Madec shoots an old prospector named Charlie. Ben insists they must report it as an accident.
