Plot summary
Caught by friends with his boyfriend shortly before he leaves the conservative countryside, Danny Winters, a gay boy from Indiana, faces his father's anger; his mother loves him but does not stand up to her husband. His father refuses to sign the scholarship application for Columbia University, so Danny departs for New York anyway, leaving his supportive little sister, Phoebe, behind. In Greenwich Village, a multiracial group of street people and drag queens befriends him, and he witnesses police violence against them. At the Stonewall Inn, Trevor, who belongs to the Mattachine Society, asks him to dance. A police raid that night arrests some customers, among them Danny's friend Ray.
