Plot summary
New York City, summer of 1994. Luke Shapiro has just finished high school and sells marijuana. His psychologist, Dr. Jeffrey Squires, takes the drug as payment for their sessions. Luke's parents argue about money, and the family faces eviction from its Manhattan apartment, so he tries to sell more. He is drawn to Stephanie, a classmate and Squires' stepdaughter. At a party he learns that his friends have gone away for the summer, and he and Stephanie are among the few still in the city.

- "I wish I could say that I sold pot and I had a shrink like Ben Kingsley, but no, it wasn't like that", admits Jonathan Levine; what he took from his own life was the details, the backdrop and the perspective, and he says the Stephanie character is a composite of a few different ladies who broke up with him.
- Levine targeted the most iconic acts of the era for the soundtrack, with Notorious B.I.G. at the top of his list, and the film's original ending was played out over Nirvana's "Lithium".
- The soundtrack from the Sundance submission edit of the movie differs from the final edit, with several tracks shifted, replaced or cut out of some scenes, possibly because of licensing issues.
