Plot summary
Peter Brackett is a veteran reporter at The Chicago Chronicle who has just published his book "White Lies" and is enjoying the fame it brought him. His paper asks him to report on a train crash, where he notices Sabrina Peterson, a newcomer at the rival Chicago Globe. Her own report on the wreck lands in the Globe and shocks his complacency. The two then race each other over the story, working the crash from different angles and inventing possible causes. After a stretch of wild reporting, both slow down and work to get the facts right, and the information each gathers points the other way.

- Nick Nolte disowned I Love Trouble and said he had sold his soul by making it, doing it only for the money, which left him tense on set with Julia Roberts; Roberts called him the worst actor she ever worked with and "disgusting."
- Elmer Bernstein wrote the underscore for I Love Trouble, but his music was thrown out and David Newman was brought in so late that posters already carried Bernstein's name; Newman had only two weeks to rescore and used a small army of orchestrators.
