Plot summary
Jesse Stone, once a homicide detective in Los Angeles, is now the police chief of Paradise, Massachusetts, a New England town on the coast. He lost the Los Angeles job over a drinking problem, and Scotch and women remain his habits. On a November night his deputy, Luther "Suitcase" Simpson, finds a body on a rocky shoreline. There is no suspect, motive or weapon, so Jesse starts by collecting the names of gun owners in town. When a second victim is found in a parking lot, he has photographs taken of every vehicle there and its license plates. In a separate case, a high school girl, Candace Pennington, will not talk about being raped, and her parents refuse to report it; Officer Molly Crane helps him there.
