Plot summary
Third-year medical students at a Los Angeles teaching hospital prepare to choose specialties. Michael Chatham, son of a prominent surgeon, wants to succeed on his own and competes with Kenny Rose, from a less privileged background, for a surgical position. Michael treats Henrietta Walker, a schoolteacher with gastric cancer, who tells him he cares too much about achievement and too little about patients. He becomes close to fellow student Gina Wyler, who is involved with surgical resident Donald Ballentine.
