Plot summary
Andy Sachs, a recent Northwestern University graduate who wants to be a journalist, becomes the junior assistant to Miranda Priestly, who edits Runway, a fashion magazine in New York City. Andy knows nothing about fashion and fits in poorly with her fashion-forward co-workers, especially Miranda's senior assistant, Emily Charlton. She plans to tolerate Miranda's demands until she can use her Runway connections to find a journalism job. When Andy cannot arrange a flight home for Miranda during a hurricane in Miami, she is berated and turns to Runway's art director, Nigel, for advice. He helps her choose clothes that suit the workplace, and Miranda begins to give her more important tasks.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Devil Wears Prada (2006)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Wintour reportedly warned major fashion designers that they would be banished from the magazine if they appeared in the film, a claim her spokespeople deny, and designers helped with background information instead. Valentino Garavani did appear, after Finerman dared costume designer Patricia Field to ask him personally.
- Streep was almost passed over because people thought she was not funny. She felt the pay she was initially offered was too low, so the producers doubled it to around $4 million, and she signed on, which allowed Fox to greenlight the film.
- Anne Hathaway actively sought the part, tracing Hire me in the sand of the zen garden on Hacken's desk when she talked about the project with the executive. Frankel liked her enough not to require an audition, though she thought she was not the studio's first choice.
- Over 100 actresses were considered for Emily before a casting agent taped Emily Blunt reading some of the lines elsewhere on the Fox lot after her audition for Eragon. She read them in her own British accent, which interested Frankel, as he liked her sense of humor.
- Miranda's bouffant hairstyle was inspired by actress Carmen Dell'Orefice, blended with the unassailable elegance and authority of French politician Christine Lagarde. Streep wanted the hair white, which the producers feared would make her look too old, but the studio trusted her.
- Fox wanted a young A-list actress for Andy and felt Rachel McAdams, then coming off Mean Girls and The Notebook, would help the film commercially, but she turned down several offers. Kate Hudson declined over You, Me and Dupree; Kirsten Dunst, Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson were considered.
- In 2016 Streep told Variety that she took Miranda's soft speaking style from Clint Eastwood and her joking from director Mike Nichols, adding: the walk, I'm afraid, is mine.
- The $100,000 budget for costumes was supplemented by help from Field's industry friends, and she estimated that a million dollars of clothing appeared on screen; the single priciest item was Streep's $100,000 Fred Leighton necklace.
