Plot summary

Anna Dunlap lives in Boston, where she teaches piano and works part-time in a college laboratory. She and Brian Dunlop are divorced, and Molly, their six-year-old daughter, lives with her. Anna falls in love with Leo Cutter, an Irish sculptor whose openness about sex changes how she sees her own life. One day Molly walks into the bathroom and sees Leo naked, and she asks to touch him; he lets her. Molly tells Brian about it, and he accuses Leo of sexually molesting her and sues Anna for custody of Molly. He argues that Leo is a bad influence on the child.
