Plot summary
Brett Eisenberg works at a Manhattan publishing house, one step below editor, and wants the title for herself. The boss who guided her is let go, and a glamorous replacement named Faye Faulkner takes over. A book signing brings her together with Archie Knox, an older man in the business. Being with Archie makes clear her unhappiness with Jed, her immature boyfriend, so she ends that relationship and takes up with him. Archie is in recovery from alcoholism, has diabetes, and is estranged from his daughter. The years between them show in small ways: he cannot work a Blackberry, and she takes him to a candy shop. He gives her advice and encouragement, including how to stand up to Faye.

- Suburban Girl was made under the title of the Melissa Bank book it adapts, The Girls' Guide to Hunting and Fishing, until it emerged that director Francis Ford Coppola held the rights to that title and his company American Zoetrope was developing its own film from the book, so the name was changed for release.
