Plot summary
Luke Davenport, thirteen, lives in the White House as the son of President Paul Davenport and first lady Linda Davenport. Secret Service agents surround him, his movements are restricted, and he resents it, so he behaves badly toward the agent assigned to him, Woods. After Woods is replaced, Sam Simms, a former boxer who won a title in 1977, takes the assignment. No one else wants it, but Sam sees it as a possible step toward protecting the President himself. Luke's only wish is to be an ordinary student at Georgetown Academy, and Sam, who had felt alone as a teenager too, becomes his friend. When a school bully, Rob MacArthur, knocks Luke down, Sam decides to teach him to fight, and Luke works up the nerve to ask classmate Katie Warren to the school dance.
