Plot summary
Sergeant Joe Friday and Officer Frank Smith are homicide detectives with the Los Angeles police department. A mobster named Miller Starkie has been murdered, and the two detectives are hunting whoever killed him. Their attention settles on Max Troy, the second-in-command of the West Coast mafia, and the two men become locked in a contest that grows increasingly bitter and personal. The picture was adapted from the Dragnet radio series, which had recently aired its hundredth episode. It was made in color, and its story came from a real investigation that was considered too violent to be shown on television.
