Plot summary
Dr. Paul Beecher, a physician in San Francisco, finds a bottle of pills among the belongings of the late Dr. Campbell, a colleague who had been testing blood drawn from vampire bats. Paul takes them home. His daughter Betsy accidentally puts the wrong bottle beside his migraine tablets, and shortly afterward Paul begins losing stretches of time he cannot account for. His former college friend Dr. Will Beaumont, who now oversees Campbell's research at the university, explains that the work aimed to push animals' minds back to a primitive state and then restore them, as a step toward advancing the intellect. Paul presses him about the pills. During a consultation he feels unwell and asks Marion Wilkins, who has a congenital heart condition, to come back the next day.
