Plot summary
Benji is a stray who sleeps in an abandoned house at the edge of a small town and spends his days making the rounds of the people who feed him. He would like a home of his own, and the Chapman children, Paul and Cindy, are his favorites, though their housekeeper Mary has to feed him in secret because Dr. Chapman dislikes dogs. The children hide him under the table when their father comes in. On his rounds Benji visits Officer Tuttle and Bill, who pays him with a bone at his café. Back at the house he finds three strangers, Linda, Henry and Riley, who mean to offer the place to their boss Mitch as a hideout.
