Plot summary
Gambler and gangster Chips Maguire shoots a man named Monks who informed on him, using a gun registered in the name of Tommy Taylor, a songwriter in his employ. The gun ties Tommy to the killing, so Chips threatens to hand it to the police unless Tommy hides him. Tommy brings him to the boarding house kept by his mother, Nora Taylor, and her friend Maggie Ryan, where Chips passes himself off as Grasselli, a man recovering from a nervous condition. Nora is glad to have her son back after five years. Maggie's daughter, the showgirl Sarah Jane Ryan, comes home the same day. Both mothers hope the two young people will marry, but Tommy seems indifferent to her.

- George Raft and John Garfield were both offered the male lead before Bogart took the part. According to Lewis, Bogart wanted the role because he was friends with Bromfield, and he persuaded Raft to drop out by saying the part was beneath him.
- Years later Warners re-issued the movie with refilmed opening credits giving Bogart top billing above Sheridan. As that is the version airing on Turner Classic Movies, it can be presumed that the original titles have not survived.
